The 5.03-carat “Aurora Green” diamond set two world auction records for a green diamond Tuesday at Christie’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels sale, selling for 130,040,000.00HKD (=16,735,187.20 USD).
Record of being the biggest Fancy Vivid Green Diamond sold,
Record for the highest price per carat for a Fancy green diamond.
The rectangular-cut Fancy Vivid Green diamond sold for more than $3.3 million per carat.
The green diamond, with VS2 clarity mounted on a gold ring surrounded by circular-cut pink diamonds, was purchased by Hong Kong-based Chow Tai Fook Jewellery , one of the largest jewelry retailers in the world. Its price was at the low end of its estimate between HK$125,000,000 - HK$155,000,000(US$16,167,122 - US$20,047,232)
The diamond shattered the previous records for a green diamond, which was set earlier this month for “The Ocean Dream,” a 5.50-carat fancy vivid blue-green diamond that sold for US$8.6 million (US$1.5 million per carat).
There is no record of any other diamond of this extraordinary color and size. However, following, thorough scientific evaluation, GIA has concluded that the Ocean Dream’s breathtaking Fancy Vivid blue-green color results from exposure to natural radiation over millions of years in the Earth.
