The recovery of the D-color, type-IIa diamond comes after Gem Diamonds switched to the higher-grade K6 section of the main Letšeng pipe earlier this year. In 2016, the company only found five diamonds with a three-figure carat weight.

The Letšeng mine is one of the highest-value diamond deposits in the world, with the July tender yielding an average price of $2,397 per carat — the highest for the company since September 2015.
